Interesting vulture

A tagged vulture was seen this week.

On the 29th April 2009 a tagged vulture was spotted on a waterbuck bull carcass along with a large number of other vultures. The tag number S003 was sent to the Birds of Prey Working Group to find out if more information was available on the bird.

The bird was born in the Mlawula National Park in Swaziland and tagged in the nest on the 26th October 2006 by Ara Monadjem of the Swaziland University. This makes "our" bird almost 3 years old.

The vulture is very healthy and has obviously joined a local colony and have moved just over 294km from its birth site.

If you spot a tagged bird of prey, pls do not ever attempt to hurt of shoot such a bird. Report all sightings of dead or alive birds to the Birds of Prey Working Group by emailing Andre Botha on andreb@ewt.org.za
