Aardwolf Fri 10 April 2009 13:24:10 More and more animals fall victim to snares. |
Early in February we were called to a nearby reserve to remove a young aardwolf from a poacher's snare. Fortunately the animal was not too badly injured and could be treated and immediately released. Sometimes called a werewolf it looks like a diminitive striped hyena, but it feeds almost exclusively on snouted harvester termites. The aardwolf is monogamous, altough dominant males may mate with their neighbour's females. Their territories range from 1-4 square kilometers in extent and is shared with their most recent offspring. In our area the aardwolf has been systematically wiped out and they are rare. We are extremely grateful that we can play a role in helping to save at least some individuals. | |
