A hand raised vervet.
Jackie was collected from another rehab centre where she was hand raised. She hand become very much imprinted on humans but after almost 4 months of being integrated into a new troop made up of wild captured and hand raised vervets she has settled well and will eventually be released back to the wild.
We do not know where many of the hand raised vervets originate from and if indeed they were truly orphaned as a result of natural occurrences. What we do know is that people do take on these small babies and soon they become too much to deal with. Normally such animals are summarily dumped and discarded. As highly social creatures they simply cannot survive on their own or be returned to the wild unless they have been successfully integrated into a troop that is set to be released into an area where there are no other resident vervet troops. To remove baby vervets from their mothers are cruel and extremely selfish. Please do not do so!
