SanWild has an amazing bush camp and we welcome guests to the reserve to meet rescued animals and see how well they have adjusted back to a life in the wild.  When guests stay in the Savannah Private Bush Camp we invite them to submit entries to our guest book.  Here you will be able to read about their experiences and daily sightings.

Darting rhinos and elephants

MARCH 12TH
by Helena

All the students had the rare chance to join Andre and their Vet on the quest to change a radio collar on one of the elephants along with inserting a radio transmitter directly into a rhino’s horn. Fantastic day ending with good people and conversation and last but not least a great dinner as always. I look forward to the upcoming week here at SanWild and all it has to offer me and hope to add again to this journal before I leave.

Animal behaviour

March 16th 2010.

Just finished our day at class with Karen, today we studied the different behaviours in different species of animal which is very interesting. We will relax a bit before Andre comes to fetch us for our daily game drive and than return for yet another delicious dinner. Just want to say thank you so very much to Louise for coming to our class today and sharing with us her stories and pictures of rescues from the past she has been involved with and for her being so humble in her efforts towards her cause. A very strong lady INDEED who's passion for SanWild is heart felt and understood by all I am sure.

My last day!

March 11,

My last day at SanWild and can not help but feel a little sad that my two weeks here has ended. I will miss the sounds of Africa very much along with sharing my morning coffee with the antelope, warthogs, impala, giraffe, kudu and all the other wonderful animals that come to drink at the camps watering hole during my stay I will even miss the loud mating call by a resident bull frog during our evening tea's hahaha….I hope that BIGMOUTH finds himself a mate and QUICK!

Thank you to all the staff for taking such good care of us all and hope to see them again in near future.

Andre, you are a doll. Your humour brightens my heart, when I think of you I will smile; your dedication humbles me in every way. I will send my spirit guide to watch over you for you are a special soul my friend, be safe always.

I have way to much about Louise to write here so I will email her on a more personal note but in short let me just say she is an amazing woman....100% dedicated in what she believes in, she has put her heart and soul into making sure the animals are protected and you can be assured Louise Joubert is a real lioness when it comes to protecting what she loves.

Help in anyway you can by donating or even booking your next vacation at SanWild. It will be an experience you will never forget.

I arrived at Sanwild at about 13h30. Andre met me at the gate and showed me where I’d be staying. After having settled into my very comfortable accommodation and meeting the staff with whom I was sharing the camp, Andre offered to take me to see the vervets.

Finally, the moment I’d been waiting for! I was so excited! When we arrived at the camp they all came to see us, knowing Andre’s truck is what brings them their food on a daily basis. They were all very curious and once they realised that we hadn’t brought them any food they settled for jumping onto Andre and myself and I was even honoured enough to be groomed by one or two of them. They displayed no aggression towards me, just curiosity. After my initial thought of “wow, this is heaven!” I started to feel a bit worried as my observations, and ultimately my report’s accuracy, would depend on the monkeys not interacting with me and behaving as if I wasn’t there. I fell asleep that night listening to the sounds of the bush.

Tuesday, 16 February 2010

Today was my first meeting with Louise; she came to the camp at about 7h30 and we spoke a bit about the project. I followed Andre to the camp where he gave the group their breakfast. For the first 30 minutes or so, my fears of the previous day disappeared as I was completely ignored whilst the group ate the variety of fresh fruit given to them. Since it was my first day of observations, I was nervous. I hoped I would be able to achieve what I’d come to Sanwild to do. The group was still mildly curious about me and I received a few inquisitive nips on my legs, but nothing sore. Initially I was overwhelmed by the group’s ongoing activity; they were never still! But I soon got into a rhythm. I had my theories as to what type of behaviours I would find and for the most part I was very happy with the observations I made. None of the negative stereotypical behaviour Louise had told me about, which had occurred in some of the babies on their arrival, was present. I only saw normal, healthy primate behaviour. The group seemed to interact well and moved around their large natural habitat enclosure, for the most part, as a single unit. I was also overwhelmed by the fact that there are so many of them; will I ever be able to tell them all apart?
